25th ANNUAL PUTNAM CO. SPELLING BEE

Musical by Rachel Sheinkin
Directed by Leigh Selting

July 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and August 3, 4, 5

Performances on Friday/Saturdays at 7PM & Sundays 2 PM CST

This Tony Award winning musical centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the annual Spelling Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups. Contestants, who finally get their chance to shine, approach the competition with all ferocity of athletes in a state wide championship game. With each correct spelling, the nerdy, socially awkward, classroom misfits display youthful exuberance. The 24 musical numbers vary from upbeat ensemble pieces to touching solos.

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives offers up fussy and cantankerous novelist Charles Condomime who is remarried but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira, who is called up by by a visiting "happy medium", one Madame Arcati.  Elvira truly raises spirits when she makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles' marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who can neither see or hear the ghost.  Memorial Opera House is delighted to present this hauntingly funny classic, one of the first plays presented here when the Community Theatre Guild was in residence!

George Gershwin is quoted as saying "Irving Berlin is the greatest songwriter that ever lived" and Broadway choreographer and director Jerome Kern famously said "Irving Berlin has no place in American music - he is American Music".  Born May 11, 1888, Berlin's songwriting career spanned decades and produced some of the most famous songs for some of the most famous performers. Featuring patriotic songs, ragtime swing, famous movie tunes, and of course Broadway classics, we'll be celebrating Berlin's 129th birthday with plenty of song!

The tragic, true story of the trial and lynching of a man wrongly accused of murder is brought to theatrical life.

Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. With a book by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) and a rousing, colorful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown (Songs For a New World, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County), Parade is a moving examination of the darkest corners of America's history.

In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.

Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten. Groups looking for powerful, moving theatrical experiences will need to look no further than this unforgettable show.

    THE SPITFIRE GRILL

    A Musical by James Valcq

    Directed by Steve Scott
    Musical Director Jeff Otto

    May 25, 26, 27 and June 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10
    Performances are Friday/Saturdays 7PM & Sundays 2 PM CST

Percy, a young woman who was recently released from prison, arrives in a small town in Maine with hopes of beginning a new life. She lands a job as a waitress at The Spitfire Grill, owned by Hannah, whose gruff exterior conceals a kind heart and little tolerance for the grill's regular customers who are suspicious of Percy's mysterious past. None is more suspicious than Caleb, whose wife Shelby, works at the diner. Despite Percy coming up with an ingenious plan to help Hannah sell her restaurant, she is accused of stealing proceeds from the sale.

  • 06/09/2018 8:00 pm - 06/09/2018 8:00 pm
