Brightside Music Presents Shemekia Copeland With The Cash Box Kings

Concert At 7:30 PM On Saturday, October 20, 2018

Brightside Music is happy to welcome Shemekia Copeland to Valparaiso to headline our Blues Fest. Experience one of the greatest voices in blues at a venue that was practically made for it. You won’t want to miss her.
Whether she’s belting out a raucous blues-rocker, firing up a blistering soulshouter, bringing the spirit to a gospel-fueled R&B rave-up or digging deep down to a subtle, country-tinged ballad, Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else. With a voice that is alternately sultry, assertive and roaring, Shemekia’s wide open vision of contemporary blues, roots and soul music showcases the evolution of a passionate artist with a modern musical and lyrical approach.
Copeland has performed thousands of gigs at clubs, festivals and concert halls all over the world during her decades long career. She’s sung with Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, James Cotton and many others. She opened for The Rolling Stones and entertained U.S. troops in Iraq and Kuwait.
With her latest album Outskirts of Love and a packed tour schedule, Copeland has her eyes fixed firmly on the future as she continues to break new musical ground. “I want to be growing, to be innovative,” she says. “I’m a lifert, singing about things that bother me, using my music to help people. My dad always said that ‘we’re all connected.’ I’m an old soul marching to the beat of my own drum,” she continues, “And right now I’m making the most exciting music of my career.

Conflict and emotional distance can work their way into one’s play over time until they become dominant choices. But what if instead of choosing conflict, we choose love instead? Making a conscious decision to appreciate and collaborate with your scene partner can take your scenework in unexpected and wonderful directions. In this workshop, Justin and Kelly will introduce techniques for finding meaningful connections with your scene partner, and explore the virtues of playing from a standpoint of total agreement. When you choose to embrace your scene partners rather than resist them, the possibilities for your scenework are truly limitless.

    **About Justin & Kelly**
Justin and Kelly spend most of their time on tour, performing and teaching at theaters and festivals around the country; since 2014, they have performed and taught over 200 shows and workshops in 24 different states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and international waters. Off stage, they promote a DIY ethos that encourages improvisers to find their own voices and own their own work. They are based in New York City, where they are the founders of Countdown Theater, a roaming pop-up improv collaborative. With Glassworks, they are the organizers of the Basement Improv Summit.

Have you ever wanted to improvise songs like they do on Whose Line is it Anyway? Then Laura & Rick Hall’s Music Improv workshop will be perfect for you!

Rick Hall (The Second City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Factory) and Laura (Whose Line Is It Anyway, Drew Carey’s and The Improv All-Stars) create a supportive, fun workshop environment where you can grow, explore and move out of your comfort zone, starting with warmups and games to help ease into singing.

If you’re new to improv in general or just want to see what song improv is about, this workshop is perfect for you. You’ll build vocal confidence and learn to listen to each other and the accompaniment. You’ll learn about creating characters and stories through song. Before you know it, you’ll be belting out your own great improvised songs! We’ll work on songprov as a natural extension of your existing improv skills. We’ll focus on creating a strong who and where for your songs, look at musical form and structure, advanced harmonies and more.

    Tickets are:
$50 for students who want to fully participate and interact directly with Laura & Rick.
$35 for people who want to audit the workshop and observe only (no stage time/direct time with Laura or Rick)

    Rocken Horse With Chick Norris

Concert At 7:00 PM On Saturday, September 15, 2018

A portion of this show's net proceeds will be donated to help regional animal shelters and rescues!

Chicago-rooted quartet ROCKEN HORSE formed in 1975 when the Windy City music scene was exploding with groups like REO Speedwagon, Styx and others. Rocken Horse lit up stages throughout the Midwest, signing their first record deal in 1980. Tight vocal harmonies gave Rocken Horse their own unique sound, anchored by a tight rhythm section and powered bytwin guitars.

Their debut LP -- "Rocken Roll" -- generated a handful regional radio singles quickly buildingthem a large Midwestern following. Their 1981 album release show at Northwest Indiana's legendary Sherwood Club sold out in a matter of hours, as over 900 people came out to rock with "The Horse," as fans have come to call them.

After a few years on the road doing headline shows and opening for top rock acts of the day,the members decided to follow their individual paths in life while always remaining the closest of friends.

In 2016, three of the original Horses -- Jim Koranda, Glenn Reyna, and Ken Silvestri -- reunited with new drummer Rick Stanislavski to kick-start the second chapter of Rocken Horse. In 2017, they recorded and released an original EP, "Three By Four," to the delight of regional fans long-hoping for such a reunion. Today's Rocken Horse concerts feature those wonderful vocal harmonies delivering a nice blend of favorites from their debut album, new originals, and assorted covers by the classic bands who inspired them. Rocken Horse have recently shared stages with Chicago's legendary Ides of March and other top talents.

Their Memorial Opera House debut will be even more special with the addition of CHICK NORRIS, the newest musical project by renown Chicago guitarist/vocalist Lorrie Kountz, famous for fronting the Chicago bands Bitch and Tough Love in the 1980s. Chick Norris is rounded out by guitarist Laura Jansons, bassist Pete Jansons, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Fite, who play 80’s and 90’s alternative and today’s current rock, retooling songs with their own artistic signature. Chick Norris has proved to be a crowd pleaser!
