A Midsummer Night's Dream portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, (the Duke of Athens) and Hippolyta, (the former queen of the Amazons). The story follows the evening adventure of four young Athenian lovers, a group of six mechanics/amateur actors preparing a play for the royal wedding, and a kingdom of fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage, filled with love, laughter, and magic.

    Story Synopsis:

Lawyer Abigail Gersten is brilliant, Jewish, and a First Amendment absolutist. Professor Bernard Cooper is courtly, polite and dedicated to convincing the world that the Holocaust was a Jewish hoax. When the government prosecutes him, he turns to Abby for help. Offended by censorship in any form, she takes the case, but gets quickly drawn into a moral quagmire. Opposing her is an idealistic prosecutor and a venerable Holocaust survivor who call her loyalties into question and make her confront the differences between what is legal and what is right. The conflict that ensues concerns issues of history, memory, free speech, and how the stories we tell about ourselves determine who we are.

"This drama is practically radioactive with relevance. The issues in this case are so loaded that they are guaranteed to push emotional buttons in anyone who sees [it]. And Mr. Sagal is to be admired for offering no easy answers. There is unquestionably the stuff of great drama in Denial." - (New York Times)

The scene is the set where Anthony J. Lefcourt, writer and director, is rehearsing his new play, a “classic whodunit” (in which all the characters are named Butler) with which he hopes to regain the success that has eluded him in recent seasons. Desperately eager to stimulate his cast to their best efforts, he has deliberately withheld the final scene of the play from them, but his patience is worn thin by the petty jealousies and romantic rivalries that detract from their concentration. In an effort to spur them on he “stages” the murder of one of the actresses, after which the plot begins to twist and turn with such dazzling ingenuity—and hilarity—that soon actors and audience alike have lost track of what is real and what is make-believe—until a surprise ending sets matters straight in a most bizarre and ironic way.

Show dates are Oct 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17, Fri & Sat shows at 7:30pm, Sun's at 2:00pm. The cost of the show is $18.00 and refreshments will be available. The door will open 1/2 hour before the show. Beatniks is located at 420 Conkey Street, Hammond, Indiana. For reservations or more info, you can go to Beatniksonconkey.com or call 219-852-0848
