The God Committee Presented by The Genesius Guild

Four transplant candidates. One heart. A St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Countless Catastrophic Opportunities. “The God Committee” is a taut, realistic exploration into how physicians decide which patient will receive the new heart, and the latest production on stage at the Genesius Guild of First United Methodist Hammond.

Time is running out as a group of people debate issues of race, gender, and of course…money. Lots of money. This medical thriller takes us into the inner workings of a Transplant Program and a decision—for both their candidates and their program—that is a matter of life and death. Science and morality clash in this riveting drama set inside a hushed boardroom filled with medical professionals who are unable to leave their own emotional baggage outside.

Using his great talent of mixing high wire tension with fiery humor, playwright Mark St. Germain has created a charged work that keeps the audience in suspense for the entire evening. Alliances are formed, broken and reformed as the committee argues, accuses, debates and ultimately votes. And just when the matter seems to be decided, the playwright upends the proceedings with theatrical dynamite.

“The God Committee” contains adult themes, making it comparable to a movie with a PG-13 rating, which may not be suitable for younger patrons. It takes the stage weekends April 28 through May 7. Performances are in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church of Hammond, 6635 Hohman Ave. in Hammond, Indiana, at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. A 3 p.m. matinee will be performed Sunday afternoons. Tickets are available at the door or by calling toll-free 877-724-7715. A group discount is available for groups of 15 or more; contact the box office for details and reservations.

At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up. No mention has as yet been made of the strange activities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of the printing press set up in the parlor; nor of Grandpa's interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn't believe in the income tax.

Like any good thriller, DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER is a tangled web of deceit and intrigue. It is a dark and dangerous story full of forbidden love, chilling suspense, blackmailers and backstabbers — figuratively and literally. Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock’s film version starring Grace Kelly, DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER is less of a “whodunit,” more of a “will he get away with it,” and tells the story of the cold and calculating Tony Wendice, who plans to carry out the perfect murder but underestimates the power of human error. In a ground floor flat in North West London Margot Wendice and ex-lover Max nervously await the return of her former tennis star husband Tony. Despite the affair being over Tony is all too aware of his wife’s deception and fears that his comfortable life style, made possible by Margot’s small inheritance, is in jeopardy. Should he kill them both or is there a better solution? Over the course of a year Tony has painstakingly planned the perfect murder. Bribing petty criminal Captain Lesgate into carrying out the deed he sets out to create a water-tight alibi for himself. But can the perfect murder exist in an imperfect world? Audiences will be on the edge of their seats every thrilling moment as Tony’s plot to murder his wife unravels before his eyes.

The setting is a classroom where an eager young teacher is about to tackle her first assignmentteaching basic English to a group of new citizens, not one of whom speaks the same language as another. Included are an excitable Italian, an over-eager Frenchman, a near-sighted German, an elderly Chinese woman and a Japanese girl. The one thing that they manage to convey to each other is that their respective names all mean "wastebasket," but struggle as she will, the teacher, Debbie, is hard-pressed to bring them beyond this point of communication. Fortunately the voice of an offstage translator enables the audience to understand what those onstage cannot comprehend, but this does not help the sorely pressed Debbie, whose frustration is increased by her fear of a mugger lurking outside the door. Rigid and pedagogical at first, she becomes more frantic and desperate as her lack of success with her charges mounts, and the wonderfully funny misunderstandings multiply, until, at last, all self-control (and sanity) vanish into total, and totally hilarious, panic.
