Time Traveler’s Jubilee: The Indiana Dunes

05/17/2018 10:30 am - 10:30 am
Memorial Opera House
Address: 104 Indiana Ave, Valparaiso, IN 46383, USA

Performances At 10:30 AM And 12:30 PM On Thursday, May 17, 2018. Presented By The Family Folklore Foundation & Memorial Opera House. All seats are $5.00.

Our time machine will take to life around the time of the Civil War…you know, when the Memorial Opera House was built by veterans. That’s when President Abe Lincoln gets the ball moving to protect America’s Wonders, including our beautiful Lake Michigan sand dunes.

Visit the Theater of Imagination (also known as the radio play) about Hoosier Heroes with cameo appearances from Stephen Mathers, Colonel Leiber, Diana of the Dunes and Gene Stratton Porter. Enjoy a rollick with the woodland plant and animal puppet show. Sing the chorus along with the South Shore Brass Band Quintet to “Back Home Again In Indiana” and “The Moonlight Shines Tonight Along The Wabash”. Take home a Time Travelers’ Home Companion booklet about the Duneland heroes, plants and animals; and also learn about how the Family Folklore Foundation, Inc. actors and puppeteers created this wonderful trek back in time.

By Dr. Meg DeMakas & Rebecca Swerdon
Featuring The South Shore Brass Band Quintet
Presented with the support of Indiana Arts Commission, National Endowment For The Arts and South Shore Arts

Written by local playwright David Hoppe, and directed by John Green of Columbia College Chicago, Sacred Sands tells the story of how the Indiana Dunes were saved from being sold off to corporations. This one evening only performance was inspired by the book 'Sacred Sands: A Struggle for Community in the Indiana Dunes' by J. Ronald Engel. This is an entertaining theatrical reading  by local artists. This piece combines music, spoken word, and dramatic dialogue to tell the story of Indiana's crowning jewel: the dunes.

Performance At 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 12

Musical theatre wouldn't be what it is without the American songwriting team of composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb.  Great songs like Isn't This Better from Funny LadyAll That Jazz from Chicago, and Cabaret from...you guessed it...Cabaret only make up a fraction of their great American song book.  You'll want to make sure to attend to hear the catchy, influential music of our favorite duo.

    Rocken Horse With Chick Norris

Concert At 7:00 PM On Saturday, September 15, 2018

A portion of this show's net proceeds will be donated to help regional animal shelters and rescues!

Chicago-rooted quartet ROCKEN HORSE formed in 1975 when the Windy City music scene was exploding with groups like REO Speedwagon, Styx and others. Rocken Horse lit up stages throughout the Midwest, signing their first record deal in 1980. Tight vocal harmonies gave Rocken Horse their own unique sound, anchored by a tight rhythm section and powered bytwin guitars.

Their debut LP -- "Rocken Roll" -- generated a handful regional radio singles quickly buildingthem a large Midwestern following. Their 1981 album release show at Northwest Indiana's legendary Sherwood Club sold out in a matter of hours, as over 900 people came out to rock with "The Horse," as fans have come to call them.

After a few years on the road doing headline shows and opening for top rock acts of the day,the members decided to follow their individual paths in life while always remaining the closest of friends.

In 2016, three of the original Horses -- Jim Koranda, Glenn Reyna, and Ken Silvestri -- reunited with new drummer Rick Stanislavski to kick-start the second chapter of Rocken Horse. In 2017, they recorded and released an original EP, "Three By Four," to the delight of regional fans long-hoping for such a reunion. Today's Rocken Horse concerts feature those wonderful vocal harmonies delivering a nice blend of favorites from their debut album, new originals, and assorted covers by the classic bands who inspired them. Rocken Horse have recently shared stages with Chicago's legendary Ides of March and other top talents.

Their Memorial Opera House debut will be even more special with the addition of CHICK NORRIS, the newest musical project by renown Chicago guitarist/vocalist Lorrie Kountz, famous for fronting the Chicago bands Bitch and Tough Love in the 1980s. Chick Norris is rounded out by guitarist Laura Jansons, bassist Pete Jansons, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Fite, who play 80’s and 90’s alternative and today’s current rock, retooling songs with their own artistic signature. Chick Norris has proved to be a crowd pleaser!

Concert At 7:30 PM On Saturday, October 20, 2018

Brightside Music is happy to welcome Shemekia Copeland to Valparaiso to headline our Blues Fest. Experience one of the greatest voices in blues at a venue that was practically made for it. You won't want to miss her.

With a voice that is alternately sultry, assertive and roaring, Shemekia's wide open vision of contemporary blues, roots and soul music showcases the evolution of a passionate artist with a modern musical and lyrical approach.
Copeland has performed thousands of gigs at clubs, festivals and concert halls all over the world during her decades long career. She's sung with Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, James Cotton and many others. She opened for The Rolling Stones and entertained U.S. troops in Iraq and Kuwait.
With her latest album Outskirts of Love and a packed tour schedule, Copeland has her eyes fixed firmly on the future as she continues to break new musical ground. "I want to be growing, to be innovative," she says. "I'm a lifert, singing about things that bother me, using my music to help people. My dad always said that 'we're all connected.' I'm an old soul marching to the beat of my own drum," she continues, "And right now I'm making the most exciting music of my career.
